Other way round, the 48/18 has a slight advantage.

the gear sizes are very similar
the 16tooth rear one would be a better bet for training as you can get new front rings and swap them over easier than new rear sprockets - so you can go up the gear size if/when you are feeling tough"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

Advantage which way?! It will be faster?
I don't necessarily want fast - just to be able to cruise at around 18-20 mph and not kill me when I get to a hill!!!
Sorry, the 48/18 has a slightly higher gear so faster on the flat but a bit harder on the hills. Usually quoted in gear inches so the 48/18 is around 71in compared to 69in for the 42/18. You can also play with gearing by using different tyres, I use a 28mm tyre with my 48/18 to give me 72in which is perfect for cruising at 20-21 mph. 18-20mph would be very doable with 42/16 and a 25mm tyre.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

I use a 76inch gear, probbaly a bit high for some, 72 inch gear is about right.
Learns you? F'kin learns you? I despair, I really do. What are they taughting in schools today? :roll:0 -
Most of the Charge SS bikes run 42/16 (the Sugino Messenger chainset) and I've used them to commute for years. Not too hard on the hills (my steepest is Stonecot Hill in Sutton which isn't steep at all really) but you can spin out to about 22-25mph in reasonable comfort too. 42/16 for me please as the ideal 'daily' ride SS.Raymondo
