    Just learn to feather the brakes, take it easy down the hill and no lockup will occur.

    Not the hardest thing in the world to do and you dont need a degree to do it.

    I think people get told at a very young age "don't use the front brake otherwise you'll go over the handlebars" and it seems to stick.

    I've only been mountain biking for a year, but for the first 6 months I barely used my front brake and had many offs due to the rear wheel being locked up and me not being in control. As others have said, feathering the front brake is the way to go.
