Hi all, has the topic of hubs been discussed on here? If so can someone tell me what would it take for a rear hub on a mountain bike to need replacing, and how do i know what needs to be done.
The reason i am asking is because i am having a front brake bleed done on tuesday, and it has been brought to my attention that there is side play in my rear wheel, my LBS are saying tht all this will need is bearings to be regreased and tightened i hope this is all tht needs doing!!
Any advice gratefully recieved, i have most tools at home, but some of the more speciallist ones like headset presses, crown race tools etc etc ... i dont have. Otherwise i would be saving myself loads of money all the time lol
Cheers
Gary

so what are you asking?
how to replace a hub or How to service it?
if the latter what hub is it?
How to cam be found in the links in may sig or on the makers webby."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

its a shimano hub on my 09 P7 looks like a Deore but the first two letters are differant. I am asking how you know when it goes wrong my mechanic at the LBS only noticed it due to the slight side play when fixed in the frame.
What sort of prob would have to occur for the hub to need replacing, as im hoping tht the above work being done sorts out the current issue mate0 -
You need to open the hub up form time to time and take a look.
Or turn ther axle by hand - any play? Does it feel gritty? If so, strip, clean, and inspect.0 -
not so sure of what im looking for mate, i dont oftern go down to tht area lol. As i said earlier what types of probs would make a hub need changing???0

I just said of the problems to look for! Turn the axle in your fingers, and wobble it. If there is play, strip it. If it feels gritty or notchy, strip it.
To strip it, see the link Nick provides in his sig, Park Tools as they have a full guide.. Here you will see what to look for inside the hub. But if it is smooth, and no play, leave it and check again in a month or two.0 -
Thanks mate will do sorry about the delay in replying i had posted tht reply before you did yours it just came out later lol lol i am not very confident when it comes down to fiddly jobs on bikes but i will give it a go
