An inexpensive but very effective cleaner to use is caravan cleaner. You dilute it something like 25-50:1, so it works out cheap, and can spray it on for even less waste. Usually use Fenwick's Caravan Cleaner, but Aldi just recently had in their own caravan/motorhome cleaner that was just £2.99 (litre) and my mate tells me is as good or better - it may well be still in stock. Diluting and spraying, one bottle may last a few years, unlike premixed muc-off, which might last a few weeks!
Regarding the drivetrain, the main thing is to wipe off the chain with a rag very thoroughly before and after applying the wet lube. This'll keep it clean and reduce the amount of road cack and dust that sticks to it. You don't need any lube on the outside surfaces of the chain.
With that in mind, it won't much matter what you use as a wet lube. You can buy fancy, expensive lubes or use dirt cheap stuff sold by the gallon, the end result will be similar.
I use some flashy stuff, Pro Gold, but I bought a couple of litres for peanuts from a club who used to sell it cheap, and apply it using a syringe-like luber-pen they provide, which minimizes waste, so it'll last me a few more years!0 -
I use a bike cleaning spray that I bought from Wilkinsons for about £3 but have recently seen a product that looks almost identical in the £ shop.
Have also read on here that wet wipes do a good job.0 -
Best chain cleaner/lube out there is Rock'n'Roll Gold.. nothing else is even close.. their Cablemagic is also about the best cable lube out there.. for everything else.. use whatever flips your switch..........................
