I know its not a big purchase etc etc. I have a Trek 1.5 road bike which i am really happy with. As a newcomer to road cycling (Injury rehab recommended) i dont have spare inner tubes for it. I ready have a C02 pump from my mountain biking days so i need some spare tubes.

I dont want tubes that puncture every couple of miles because they are so thin they cant handle a bit of commuting. Is there any recomendations for a good alround (Lightish) tube.

  • I've never had any sort of problem with specialized tubes but have just bought some Michelin which are lovely, as far as tubes go - avoid latex but they would be my recommendations.

Another vote for Michelins, i have them on my bike and have had no trouble at all.

(just the standard ones that cost about 4quid a piece)

To be fair, as long as you have tyres with good p*ncture protection then most tubes (even shops own brand ones) will be fine.

If a shard of glass makes it through your tyre then the tube will burst if its a £3 tube or a £30 one.

Whatever you can find, normally go for Conti tubes myself as they are cheap.

Whenever I'm buying a bit of kit like some shorts or whatever I always look for some tubes to add to my basket. My buying choice goes like this.

Go to the tubes section, sort by price lowest to highest, scroll down to the first brand I recognise which will usually be on sale for about 3-4 quid, make sure they have the right size, make sure they're not unusually heavy . . . . add to basket.

If you're just buying tubes on their own then check out the pack of 10 deals, Ribble have conti and vittoria at £23 ish which makes them uber cheap

    par example

Ribble is always a good choice for tubes. I got 10 Conti's for £22.50 when I bought some Rego, you pretty much get at least 20% off everything when you spend over £35 and they were half price anyway so you can't really go wrong

But as Ollieda said, tyres with good puncture protection are more important than tubes and I agree with this 100% :)

It's no wonder why. I HATE these tubes. For me, they always fail at the joints shaped like a +, making them very hard to repair. I'm not talking about a puncture either, they are just a crap design and fall apart.

ive just ordered some michelin ones for £2.60 from ribble.
  • I have had trouble with valves splitting away from the tube: I know it has happened with a variety of makes of tubes. when i did some research people seemed most confident about Schwalbe. Since I have used Schwalbe tubes but also followed the suggestion to cut a disc of old inner tube, punch a hole in the middle and place over valve before refitting tube. i've had no problem since, but whether it is the Schwalbe tubes or the disc I couldn't say. Other advice was to screwe down the ring when inlating the tyre so as to fix it, but in normal use to loosen the screw ring so of there is movement of the tube it isn't gooing to pull away from ther valve.
Bit off topic, but useful info I think

I've found this as well, but it's only happened to me a few times over a lot of mileage.

Was packing 2 tubes into my saddle bag at the weekend, I have some continentals and Vittorias. It occurred to me that the Vittoria ones (that someone recommended sold by Ribble) are 700x19/23 - this makes them a lot smaller and easier to get into a small saddle bag than the continentals.

    Small bonus anyway.....
