7 & 8 Speed Interchangability ???

I run a 21 speed system on my tarmac spec R8, 13-21 cassette.
However getting hold of 7 spped cassettes is becoming more difficult.
I have researched the dimensions of 7 speed sprokets and spacers and they seem to be the same as 8 speed versions.
In a nut shell, could I run an 8 speed cassette with 7 speed gear lever ? albeit without the biggest sproket operational.
Thanks in advance.

I think the spacing is the same. You could probably find a second hand 8 speed shifter really cheaply though and use all of them.I don't do smileys.

Thanks guys
I have a really good SLX gear lever, hense not wanting to buy a used one.
The 13-23 does not have a T16, which I find the best gear for slightl gradients.
Thinking to buy an 8 speed to break it down and measure directly.0 -

yes but you will need a new wheel/hub."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

You can use 8 of the 9 speeds from a 9 speed cassette (SRAM come apart easily) on a 7 speed freehub, use a 9 speed shifter.
