Anyone have any views on decent carbon bottle cages, that hold a bottle well, don't break easily and look good?

Thanks

  • All that thread refers to is cheap ones. I was after recommendations for GOOD ones.

There is usually a difference! :o

Best I think, Arundel Mandible. Not the ultimate lightest, but look good and hold very well. Available in white and black

If I spend £200 on a bottle cage, will it make me a more faster cyclist?

Will my stats go up? (will I see +10 for coolness bove my head?)

FWIW I still use the metal ones(from the olden days). I like them because they are
inexpensive and you can bend them slightly to hold your bottle as tight or as loose as you like. I realize that I didn't really answer your question. Just putting in my 2 cents worth.

    I bought 2 x Zipp because:

    a) They matched my new £2,000 white frame, bar tape, full wardrobe of Assos and Rapha etc etc. and
    b) No one told me about £200 bottle cages otherwise I would have bought those instead!

I can confirm Zipp are light, look good, hold bottles securely, easy to get in and out on the ride - but the white finish has worn through to the underlying carbon in a couple of weeks, so I'm not sure they will look great in a year or two.

In short they do nothing a £5 bit of wire doesn't do, the weight saving is irrelevant and they cost 10x more.

But I knew all that when I bought them.....

Campag's carbon bottle cages are the best I've come across. They are light, which is ok, but apart from looking great, where they score for me is that sliding a bottle in and out is so much smoother than the other ones I've owned. They also keep the bottle securely in place.
Spesh S Works cages are the worst I've had - they look the part but it's a wrestling match trying to separate bottle from cage. Not the kind of distraction I need when I'm scooting along the road.

    +1 on the Zipp ones.

    Stylish and work well too.

Had them on the bike for a few years, so they last too.

I can confirm they make you go faster too. Zipp really are ahead of the game in aero bottle holding technology.

Arundel - particularly the sideloaders if you have a compact frame or the Mandible. They do a couple of others as well

PX cages are light and do the job well. Good tight fit and feel pretty strong. Not that expensive if bought in pairs either.

The Look ones are supposed to be good, will probably get some for my new bike but they're £45 each I think.

I have them but I justified it only because they are on a Look! I paid £40 each which is pure madness*. However, they do work very well and the finish on the inside is far more durable than the cheap Chinese ones I have on my Ribble.

    * I was going to put the standard Elite cages on but they looked so clumsy in comparison that I couldn't do it to my lovely new bike!

My £30 Boardman ones work well.

I think the two bolts weigh about the same as the cage.

I have Zipps on one bike that now cost £45.00+ each. And Planet X on the other which cost £30.00 for two. They look very similar and both work well. The Zipps are much older so cant comment on the longevity of the PX. The lacquer is wearing off the inside of of both but I guess that's inevitable. Its worth getting Titanium bolts on ebay with larger flatter heads, as normal cage bolts, I dont feel, provide enough overlap.
Campag Record cages are a mad price, glad to hear they work well.

ha - thats interesting as I have just changed from the campag carbon ones (centaur carbon) to the specialised s-works cages - they match my frame better (s-works roubaix)

which means I have a set of two centaur carbon cages for sale if anyone is interested...!

Interesting that the Campy cages are made by Elite nowadays, who (IMO) make the best cage... the sior. Which is now also available in a cheaper race version.

Used these on the MTB and during this years tour of Flanders sportive, would recommend them in an instant
