My first bike was a viking san remo and I now want to get something a little better, I am looking at a boardman comp and would like to get an opinion on the bikes if anyone has any. My budget is up to £700 so any other opinions on other makes would be good

I had an 07 one, my first road bike for 30 years so can't compare.
I was really pleased with it, more pleased when I changed the bars and cassette.
My son is now really pleased with it.
Got a Burls Ti touring bike now, so still can't compare.--

Lots of us have them on here. All of us are very pleased with them. The bikes are strong, light and very well spec'd. VFM is as good as you can get.
The only people who diss them are LBS owners (because they can't compete) or people who have some irrational dislike of them because of their high spec for the price.
Halford stores are marmite. The good ones are very good, the bad ones are very bad. Shop around to find a good store if yours isn't.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Well I tried a Scott S35 I think with Tiagra. Tiagra works just fine, and the frame is REALLY stiff!
But if you look for 2010 bikes you could get a bargain. For 700 quid nowadays I think you'll only be able to get Sora new and we all know how shite Sora is.
Try to get something with at least Tiagra shifters. Oh, the Comp at least has SRAM Apex so it will be light with really wide gearing.

but try before you buy.
Raleighs tend to be cheap but their non-carbon bikes haven't got good ratings from BR0 -
The Comp does indeed have Apex, together with a 10 speed 11-28 1050 'Rival' cassette and Double Tap shifters.
It's somewhere between Tiagra and 105 but way above Sora.
To get Double Taps at this price break puts this bike in very rare company.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Hm, interesting. I know that there are clear differences between the Shimano shifters, but do you mean that the SRAM ones are pretty much mechanically identical (although of course RED is carbon)0

Apex shifters are the same as Rival but with ali brake levers, instead of carbon.
The internals are the same (read - excellent).Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Im thinking of the Comp myself and there is a 10% discount code - PPBIKE into the Halfords online checkout then do a pickup in store this knocks the Comp to 719.00.
Not sure how it works when you go to store but cant see why that doesnt work since it says the price you see online is what you pay in store.0 -
I'd o for a Boardman if I had to buy from Halfords.
Bang for the buck seems second to none.0 -

I've got an 08 Comp, it's great. Thinking of selling it now though I fancy somthing with a bit more plastic in it 8)Saracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame

Use quidco for another 3% (or 7.8% till midnight tonight!)0 -
and finally, the Halfords in the centre of Leeds has 20% off the 2011 Comp - or at least it did do last weekend - making that bike a bargain.Synapse Alloy 105 / Rock Lobster Tig Team Sl0

This is great value. Think it will come out at £715 if you join Merlin VIP (for free).

Is it? I think it's alright. I'd probably take the mudguards off for the summer but I like black bikes.0
