Formula ora's or stick with the XT's? OR.....

Need advice on brakes.

My Marin has a set of XT (M775) disc brakes fitted and I find them fine for the type of riding I do but a little under powered in extreme cases.

I have a set of Formula Ora K18's here and wondered if it's worth fitting them with new pads and getting them bled to see if they are any better and selling the XT's or just selling the Ora's.

My other option is to sell both and try some Saint brakes which have got good reviews. I'm unsure on this last option as I was very dissapointed at spending a near fortune on a set of Hope M4's to find them less powerful and more niggly than the XT's.

What would you do?

Personally Oros, why not just fit a bigger disc to the front?

Should have mentioned that I'm running a 180 front and a 160 rear already.

Turns out on cleaning up the Ora's, the reach adjustment barrel thats part of the front lever has stripped the thread! Waiting for LBS to get back to me on how much it's going to cost to repair as they think it means a new front master cylinder.

    We'll see.

To throw another brake into the mix, most of the guy's at my LBS (Cycleworks, Guildford) run high end Elixir's on thier bikes. They rate them better for stopping power than Formula's but with the same weight.

At the end of the day, all I want is the ability to have "rolling stoppy" power when I need it but with good modulation and both reach and bite point adjustability without carrying a tonne of tools with me.

I think the K18's will be up for grabs in the FS section as soon as I've got them to a working state. I might well try some second hand Elixir CR's just for the crack and go from there.

you should be able to haver that sort of power with any of them at 180mm.

I've got Oros on my 29er Scandal and XT on my Meta. To be quite honest I prefer the XTs, they're easy to bleed and keep air free, have tons of clearance so don't need much tweaking and the lever action on mine just seems lighter.

before ya go do that. go find yaself an engineerin company that can install helicoils. if there good enough for spark plugs there plenty good enough for a brake master cylinder. ive used em for years on motorbikes and cars and not had a failure yet.
