Hello - it's not a stupid question. How are you going to know if you don't ask? You measure from the centre bolt to the centre of the handlebars. If your not sure what size you need you could always ask your LBS what they would advise.
Where would you be if you fell down a hole?.. Stuck down a hole... in the fog... Stuck down a hole, in the fog, at night... WITH AN OWL!
  • Centre of stem clamp to center of bar clamp is the standard measure for a stem.

So the quoted length of a stem will correspond to this measurement...
...apart from Deda, who do things slightly differently e.g. a 120 Deda stem comes up as 125 using this measure.

Something else to take into account is the angle of the stem e.g. 3T do a +/-6 and +/- 17 option. So the effective length of a 120 stem will be different for each.

As an added bonus, bar width is measured centre of drop to centre of drop...
... apart from Deda, who measure outside of drop to outside of drop e.g. a Deda 46 = everyone else's 44.
It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.
