I thought this would be a link to one of the many American cycling forums that I have stumbled across asking what gun people carry when going for a ride.

In 2006 a cyclist in Telford was fined for obstructing traffic by not using a cycle lane, although this was later overturned.
I believe there's also a case of contributory negligence by a cyclist hit whilst not using a cycle lane across a slip road.0 -
