That's because they are awful.
Rubbish as flats and a hassle as SPD's.
Compromises rarely work well.I don't do smileys.

I have crankbrothers Mallet 2's and they work fine, they sometimes struggle with clearing mud in realy boggy conditions.
There are some good deals around on them at the mo as well.0 -

why do you want caged SPDs?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I use Shimano M520, M424 and M647 Pedals, the 647 works best for me off road as I like the feel of the platform and for reasons unknown the 647 finds the cleat easier.
Its down to personal choice if you like caged spd,s its only by trying them will you find which you prefer.0 -
M647 for me too, great pedal. That said would like to try the new caged XTR0

Before swapping to flats I loved my M647's. Really easy to clip in due to the springloaded pedal angle and the cage really shrugged off rock hits. Only sold them as I was doing more technical stuff and felt flats were safer0

+1
Also been looking at the new XT and M530 version of the XTR trail pedal, same cage/style but at a lower price point.0 -
Time Z Control. I much prefer the feel of them to Shimano pedals, and the platform is actually quite useful. Totally bomb-proof too.0

Time Z control for me too, better sealing and bearings than crank bros mallets, same float, better release angles for me.--
