i'm getting a small amount od movement from my fork stem. Here's the story...
I decided to remove the forks so i could weigh them. As it happens, they are monstrously heavy at 1100gms! But as i removed them, i knocked the bits out of the top headset so didnt see what order or how they fitted.

this is a Cane Creek integrated H/S.

I've put it all back together and seems to be in the correct order, but i have a little movement. The bit that confused me really, was the compression ring. It sits in the bearing fine, but i notice it has a groove running around it as though it should be clicked into something, but it cant sit any further down into the bearing.there is also a thin ring that seems to fit on top of the compression ring. It can fit into the groove of the compression ring but not well enough to remain in there.

From what i can see from the images on canecreek website, all seems to be in the right order, but when i tighten everything up, i have some movement. I would have thought there should be zero movement, or is a tiny bit acceptable?

thanks :)

ps. i'm going to change those heavy alu forks out for carbon at some point...

My Daughters steel forks are lighter than that!

The picture you've posted is of an external headset with cartridge bearings.....

    looks a lot like 10IS http://canecreek.com/manuals/Headset_In ... ctions.pdf

The pic in my first post was to show the bearing, compression ring and the slim cover/washer above that, which looks the same to my eyes

Ok then pics of the parts of YOUR headset that you are having issues with.

unless you can see which it is on your bike.

You most likely have missed something or have something in the incorrect order but without knowing exactly which headset or seeing your headset it is hard to say correctly.

most likely spacers and center cones.

On the top cover, it has the code:
    VP-A01ACG

a bit of googling threw up this:
    http://en.vpcomponents.com/headset_show ... =12&pid=12

so its a SEMI Integrated (my bad). Cant find much useful info about these, or where one might buy parts or even a complete replacement for it. So perhaps i should move my question along a bit...

If i'm planning on replacing the forks anyway, to save bothering with removing the crown race from the old fork and refitting it to the new one, maybe it would make more sense to just replace the headset with a recognisable one - in which case, what things do i need to consider? I noticed that some headsets come with numbers after such as 45/45 or 36/45, i'm not sure what these relate to. What would be a recommended (but cheap) headset to install?

i'm pretty confident i can fit a headset without too much trouble, done it on a few m/cycles over the years so i'm guessing its a similar procedure.

    thanks :)

    fixed.
had to apply some of the grey matter to work out how something that should be pretty simple, was causing me troubles. so i had a little think...

i'd tightened up the bolts in the wrong sequence.
Directly above the top cover, there is a spacer which tightens, followed by a few regular spacers, then the stem and the top cap/pre-load. I'd tightened up the first spacer BEFORE i did the pre-load.

Loosened it all off, did pre-load, then gently nipped up the spacer and stem, all is ok now.
