Morning all!

I kindla ask you all to keep my father in law in your prayers over the next few weeks.

Yesterday while out riding, while coming through a corner at about 55kmh, my father in laws back wheel slipped on some gravel causing him to crash. He landed firectly on his head, and is in intensive care in the hospital, and will be for the next few weeks. Due to having landed on his head, he has severe brain swelling, as well as a few broken bones and numorous contusions on his body.

He is an amazing rider, and person, I really hope he gets back in full working order as quickly as possible. Please keep him in your prayers!

Many thanks,
Sean

Really sorry to hear that mate!

Just another reminder that goes to show how dangerous this sport is, whether it be a pro-tour race, or a sunday club run, the danger is always there.

I wish him a full and speedy recovery

    Thanks everyone!

He was wearing a helmet, we always ride with them because of the danger. We'd be in a completely different situation if he wasn't wearing his.

    Thanks though guys and gals!

Can I (optimistically perhaps) make a polite suggestion that this thread is about concern for someone's badly injured relative, not the old helmet debate, which would be totally inappropriate here.

Hope things go well for him MM, I for one am praying for him.

Surprisingly, his bike was completely alright. A small dent on the top tube, but otherwise everything was perfectly fine. Had to walk it home yesterday, and gave it a full check through and not even scratches on derailleur.

The crazy old man is asking about his bike, and when he found out it was fine, he cracked a smile. His brain works in weird ways sometimes! Biking is his life, and I hope he manages to get back on. It would kill him not being able to cycle! Just gotta convince the mother in law to allow him back on one!

    God speed to him!

Just been to visit him, things are looking a bit more on the up. Doctors say he will make a full recovery, but we need to be careful during this week as to not stress his brain, as there is now a blood clot inside, and if he gets too stressed it most likely won't go away. At least that is my understanding of the situation. He will be ok though.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers everyone.

I completely understand your point but judging by the injuries the first thing I thought was "helmet"?

As the OP said, they always wear helmets and he didn't want to think what the result could have been without one.

FYI -- I have a helmet but have never worn it. It is made by Bell and that is apt because that is what I feel like.

However reading posts like this makes me think I should swallow my pride and start wearing it.

Anyway - wishing your father in law the best for a successful recovery.

    Many thanks for the wishes.

All I will say about helmets is a crash can happen at any speed, any terrain, any cirumstances. I was speaking with mother in law, and her friends husband also crashed this week and ended up in hospital. We were really pushing our limits when the crash with my father in law happened, but the in laws friends husband crashed going 8kmh and landed himself in the hospital. One silly tiny mistake and you never know what can happen.

It is your choice not to wear a helmet, I don't recommend not wearing one, but everyone has freedom of choice, and if that is your choice and you are fine with the risk, as long as your riding, who cares!

Since Gunter is in the hospital, i'm taking up the slack for him around their house. Had a long talk with her this morning, about not feeling bad or worried when he goes riding. Seemed to work, she even encouraged us to ride together more. Sounds win to me!

Also since i'm spending so much taking care of his hound, he has just given me a few shiny bling parts for my bike as a thank you gift. Seven more wins!
