I am at the beginning of July riding from Edinburgh to home which is just south of Selby, over 3 days with 2 stop overs, the 2nd of these is at a village just outside of Darlington, I am looking for ideas and experiences from people. I rode the Brian Robinson Challenge and Richmond Sportives this year both at Bronze standard.
My original plans have been to head south and stick to the B709 towards Langholm or Brampton, I will be booking into a BandB and carrying as llittle as possible

Travel light, obviously.
Wash your cycling gear after check-in and dry overnight - less to carry.
Only take one change of clothes for overnight ( 2 sets of underware).
You will get toiletries at the B&B, only pack toothpaste & brush.
Remember chargers but only if you will need them.
Carry enough tools and spares to get you to the next bike shop.
Carry enough money for the trip, and a credit card.
Not conclusive, but a start.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I live in Edinburgh and the B709 through Inverleithan is a good route - although not exactly flat to begin with! I've cycled from Carlisle to Edinburgh before and the route through the borders is nice undulating territory - and very pretty countryside. Also lots of places to stop to top up with liquid and food. You might want to think of carlisle as a place for your first stop - I stayed at Cornerways Guest House which is very cycling friendly - and near the city centre for food in the evening. There's also a cinema there in case you get bored!0

Check out the sustrans coast and castles route. That will get you to Newcastle or give you an idea of a quite route to there. Not the most direct but some great scenery between Berwick and Newcastle.0

The previous two posts joined together would make an interesting route. Edinburgh to Innerleithen to Melrose, Berwick on Tweed then onto the Coast & castles route is superb. Lindisfarne section could involve a short walk but otherwise very interesting and scenic route with plenty variety, some short hills and plenty flat. You can then pick-up several of the Sustrans routes to get to your destination.
You have plenty of options in perfect cycling country, chose the one which suits your time-scale and accommodation requirements. Bon Voyage !Pedaling spans generations.0 -
Thanks for that folks
I have plunged for Edinburgh - Langholm first day sticking mainly to B709
Langholm - Middleton st George ( nr Darlington) second day (have freedigs here)
Then on to home on the last day in a village just south of Selby.
Have not fully planned second day route, plenty options might like to tick off a couple of climbs from 100 climbs book as well that day....0
