Evening,

does anyone use M520's on their road bike? I've just rebuilt an old racer and have M520's on my mountain bike but dont want two sets of cycling shoes due to different cleat types on road clipless pedals.

Will they do the job just a well?

cheers

Use them on my commuter and they are fine for the job. Did consider them for the roadie also but went for SL's

I use them on mine. They work well enough for me although I'm not as fit or fast as a more experienced roadie who may not find them as good.

I used them before upgrading to SPD-SL, and sometimes with I still had them on my bike for short trips to the shop etc!

Very good pedals, and cheap as chips!! The pedals are usually about £2 more than a set of Cleats that you get with them lol!

got em on my boardman, not used proper road pedals for the same reason as you. Can't imagine they'll be much better as long as you've got decent shoes.

  • I have them on my old road bike and I think they are just great.

In fact I bought another set today for £14 to fit on my new Planet X SL. Bargain.

Yepp, I have used them extensively and still have them on my tourer. I use M540s on my other two road bikes as I find them slightly better but not enough to warrant upgrading from M520, just buying when it is time to replace (if you see what I mean).

You do need shoes with decent stiff soles to prevent hot spots if you are doing some mileage though.

Have mine on my road bike for two years - can't fault them. Use Shimano M086 shoes. They look like road shoes but the cleats are recessed so you can walk normally (instead of like a duck) when off the bike.

I switched over to road biking a few weeks ago after growing a bit bored of MTB, and use my M520 pedals on the roadie. They work just as good as other road specific clipless pedals, and are alot cheaper as well as much easier to get in and out of. Would maybe consider going to some SPD SLs or some Look Keos just for the sake of it eventually, but see no reason to spunk the extra cash out right now.

To answer your specific question, no, but only if you are - or aspire to be - a club level or pro racer. The advantage of the SPD-SL is the larger contact surface area and stiffer soles so the power transfer is better...

To answer your implied question, yes of course they'll work just as well as on the MTB, so go for it... :)

I just wanged a pair on a new Specialized Allez Elite (can't be arsed spending £200 plus on SPD-SL's yet) and they make a very big gifference to flats.

Acceleration is much brisker and you can use higher gears on the flat so long as you remember to pus and pull at the same time...

Probably going to be about £200 when you include stiff shoes and pedals but that was my fault for doing a typo  Edinburgh cycles shoes start about 100 for ones that you can't bend.

I've just bought a pair for my road bike from CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=3759

    Seem to get cracking reviews.

Just need to decide on some shoes now...

Yup, same reason as you - more than one bike, need practical shoes

Just bought some Spesh shoes (MTB style but stiff soled) and well pleased with them

Dirt cheap also, think Wiggle doing them for under £20 at the moment

It's just a hill. Get over it.
