Vitus Vee-1 or Marin Hamilton 29er

Hi,
I'm looking for a basic, low maintenance, all purpose bike to do basic commuting and very light offroad work. I really don't want a suspension fork as it isn't necessary for my needs and, for my budget, would probably be rubbish anyway.
The Vitus Vee-1 looked like a good choice but, for more or less the same price I could get a Marin Hamilton 29er (2009 model).

Also, would I need to get a different frame size than normal with the 29er to account for the bigger wheels?
Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
