Seat post size

I am building up a retro mtb with a modern twist.The seat post size on the original 1998 spec list says the size is a 27.0. Do i have to keep to this exact size or is there a little room for maneuver.

The post i would like to purchase is a 27.2 SDG I-fly i-beam.

If the spec list says 27.0 then that is the maximum size you can use.

A smaller diameter post can be shimmed to fit.
