My Paramo ( a Velez ) is 2 years old now. It is oil stained but still water proof. It is so stained that mrs vorsprung says it looks disgusting. It is true what alfablue says about the DWR coating. This is the main thing that keeps the rain out.

I wash my Paramo regularly in Techwash and then reproof with TX Direct. I cool iron it to "reset" the fibres in the Analogy layer, we don't have a tumble drier

I also have a 2 layer eVent coat (a Montane Stormrider) and a Gore Paclite Oxygen IV. These are both pretty good but not as good as the Paramo

I had a Altura coat once, it was terrible. It kept out the rain but did not allow out any sweat whatsoever. It always ended up wetter on the inside than the out.
