lopes chain device broken ?

How the hell did i manage to bust my chain device.No crash or impact yet the outer plate on the lower guide sheared right off.Thus leaving the backplate to the lower guide the pulley wheel and the bolt,im at a loss to what happened, at over £100 i expect better after 3 rides would this be a warrenty job do you think?
