Road: 30 tooth IRD cassette with Ultegra

Hi all.
I have a 12-28 tooth Ultegra cassette with a compact chainset. As I felt I could do with a 30 tooth, I bought an Interlock Racing Design 12-30 10 speed cassette. I fitted it to the bike, with a new SRAM 10 speed chain, keeping the original short cage derailleur. It all shifts OK, there's no rubbing on the jockey wheels, but when I put power into it, there is a sound like the chain and sprocket don't quite match, like a grinding. Is this a compatibility issue?
Any suggestions gratefully received, I'm off to the cols next week!

Just to update, it all works!! I've progressively shortened the chain and after some very big hills last week ( Pt St Bernard, Roselend, dePre, Madeleine, Iseran ) it seems to have bedded in.
Highly recommended.0 -

I know I must man up, but after 46km of the Iseran it ain't half worth it!0
