Is there a correct way to store tyre's that are not in use, I have some tyre's that I will only be used for off road stuff, If they are just left sitting in my garage awaiting usage is there a change that they could degrade?

I know this may sound daft but i seem to remember as a kid bikes that were not used for awhile had cracked tyre's.

  • Mode of failure is artificial ageing causing the elastomeric bonds to break down or migrating plasticisers if there is an artificial component in the compound. Ageing will acelerate in the heat and light (rather tlike ourselves) so keep them out of both preferable. The migrating plasticiser bit can be soled by wrapping separately in a layer of newspaper. But I hang mine (unfolded) on the shed wall.
  • under the bed.

I think its probably anywhere thats not damp.

Allens chemistry explaination is spot-on however the most important thing is keeping them out of sunlight...

UV degradation is a huge killer of polymers and elastomers.
