Can I have your opinions please.
I want to take a giant trance x2, and swap the front fork for a 140mm fork.
Is this sensible?

it works great and greatly improves the bike and no need to check with giant as they themselves have specced trance x's with 140mm forks. i would suggest sticking a zero degree stem on though to bring the already high front end down a bit

I'm thinking of doing this to my Trance X4 and, as pointed out to me by Rockmonkeysc, there are quite a few posts on the Southerndownhill forum with people who've already done this and say that it works well.

I'm thinking of going with some Rockshox Sektor RL Coil U-turns (110-150mm) with 20mm maxle, which should stiffen up the front end a bit as well.
Also toying with the idea of putting a slightly longer rear shock on it (200m i2i, 51mm travel which should give 150mm rear travel) to balance it out and give me 150mm travel front & rear. Not sure what this would do to the overall height of the bike though?

what you just said is not possible, the linkages only allow the fitting of a 185mm shock. to fit a 200mm shock it would have to be compressed which would take you back to having the amount of travel you started with

Thanks - didn't think about that, I just looked at the Giant booklet that came with the bike and saw that the Reign has 6" of travel and uses a 200 x 51 shock - forgot all about linkages and clever stuff like that!!
At least you've saved me thinking any further about this (daft) idea, I knew someone with an engineering brain would set me right!!

to confirm my bike whatever year it is looks like this with a 140mm pike attached

and like this with the fork at 95mm

and like this roughly prior to being "rawed"
