Derailleurs - Shimano Deore or SRAM X4

Hi,

A friend of mine is wondering which to choose and which is better - SRAM X4 or Shimano Deore M592. Could you tell me which one you would choose and the differences between them?

He has a Shimano Altus.

Shimano. But it depends on his shifters. They are not compatible.

X4 will not work on Altus. Deore will.

But how many rear cogs does he have?

I think Sonic means shifters

You can only use Shimano rear mechs with Shimano shifters (with only a couple of exceptions re which shifter)

Sram rear mechs will only work with Sram shifters

So what shifters are to be used with the mech in question?

8 but he is wondering if it will work with 8 as It says that Deore is for 9? His shifters are Shimano Alivio.

You need Shimano 8 speed shifters. Any Shimano 7/8/9 speed rear mech will work with them.


EDIT: you have 8 speed shifters if not the new alivio lol.

Deore 9 speed, and SRAM x4 (or any SRAM X series) will NOT work.

Yes I know. He is just wondering which derailleur is better and if the Shimano Deore one is good in mud.

The X4 will not work with your shifters.

one might be better than the other but why bother if it doesn't work? Deore, because it'll work with your mate's set up and it's decent
