Hi - doing a loop to Southport and back tomorrow, and want to stop at a nice cafe somewhere in Parbold, ideally just before the big hill coming back from Southport (so Newburgh side rather than Standish side) for a sandwich & drink.

I havent been that way in a long time, so I'm not familiar with the surroundings.

A friend is driving out to meet me there as I cycle back through, hence the need to try and plan a location in advance.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

why not brave the hill and pop into the wiggin tree.!!!

Theres a cafe down either mill lane or lancaster lane I think, I'm sure its mill lane but I've only ever been in it of a saturday, so not sure about sundays.

Theres a few pubs as well before you get to the hill who do food, just after Higher lane, and one before higher lane at the weird little triangular junction thing at the end of cobbs lane.

ok just checked it is mill lane, if you google it its opposite the windmill hotel, on google maps theres a red and 2 blue cars parked outside of it.

So, your plan is to take on the biggest hill on your ride with cold legs after a cafe stop.
I'd suggest a stop at the top or nearer to Southport. Regardless, have a good ride.

If I were you I wouldn't want a cafe stop at the bottom of the hill. Why not one of the two cafes on the canal at Rufford? From there you can take the road out towards Hilldale and Parbold. You'll have the choice of Hunters Hill, Stoney Lane or Parbold Hill - all different but all parallel and will get you back in the right direction. I rode all three last Wednesday, along with Roby Mill, Farley Lane and the Beacon.

    Good fun!

    Holy shirt batman

I did this today ~ 73 mile round trip. Sorry if I knew I would have scouted some cafe's for you.

There is The Wayfarer on the right just before the hill, it's a pub really but you can sit in the garden and have a snack.

The return leg from southport however normally contains a pretty brutal headwind I should warn you. Todays sapped my strength and with it being my third consecutive outing on the bike this week there is no remorse for the weak! :)

Thanks for all the advice - I had planned to do the Parbold Hill "cold" - thinking I'd be refreshed - not a good idea in retrospect, I suppose I should get to the top and meet my friend at the Wiggin Tree... (or stop a few miles before in Rufford)

It'll be my longest ride so far, hence me building in a decent stop at 50 miles (my previous furthest) to make sure I make the full 73 miles to home!

If I'm knackered at the 50 mile, then my friend will drive me home!

    I'm just dreading any headwinds!!!

Will do some googling based on the above suggestions!

I'd suggest stopping off at the cafe at the marina in Rufford.

Todays wind looks less severe being NE around 8mph so not as sapping but will be annoying at times. Let us know how it went secteur.

No i'm not psychic, he started another thread this morning to complain about the weather forecasting, apparently it's torrential rain where he is. Shame, it's nice here.

It was raining when I got up (near where he lives) and I just read the relating weather post he done. It doesn't mention though that he didn't bother, at least I hope he did do some ride as opposed to none.

Yesterday's weather was nicer albeit quite a hot one. I would trade the wind for it being overcast. Where are you based ant?

I'm in Southport, right by the sea. I have to go east for a decent ride so I like easterly winds.

    Hi fella's

Yes I set out but rapidly turned back due to bad weather (it was 0800ish, I think) and a technical problem.

I will still do this route, but will be next weekend now.

Thanks for the input above - my riding schedule was designed & changed (for the better) as a result of the suggestions here.

Technical problem now sorted and weather looks so-so, so I may get out for a quick hilly 15 miler tonight.

I went out on a club ride this morning and headed out over Billinge, Shevington, Standish, Wrightington etc. and it was horrible. I couldn't feel my fingers and toes after 20 miles so we headed for home. We didn't even stop at the cafe. Of course, by the time I got home the weather was improving, but my toes weren't.

Back out this evening, I think.

Perhaps we should arrange a get-together ride in this area?

Do you ride with harry middletons club, only I bumped into one a few weeks back who said a few of them were off on the dragon ride, and given the bad feedback in the sportive section I just wondered how they got on.

I do ride with Middletons, but I'm not one of those that signed up for the Dragon Ride.

I haven't heard any feedback so far.
