Shimano R077 - Seriously uncomfortable?

I recently bought my first road bike a Cannondale Caad8, So I bought a pair of Shimano R077 shoes and 105 pedals.

After riding for 40 minutes or so my feet start to hurt, mainly my little toes. I have moved the cleats back and forward and it makes no difference.

I'm starting to think the shoes are causing the problem. Are Shimano shoes known to be problematic? How do they compare to the more expensive brands?

Jake

All feet are different as are shoes, they just need to fit properly!

Shimano shoes aren't problematic - I have some that are fine.

Like most normal shoes different brands of cycling shoes have different fittings particularly around the width. Maybe you should try a few other brands at your LBS to find a wider fit. There's also quite a few reviews of road shoes in the Bikes & Gears section of this site - Northwave have some with wider fittings and Specialized aren't as narrow.

Also check you are not doing them up too tight, as this can cause numbness and pain in the toes. It shouldn't be a problem with cleat location, but either bad fit or too tight when done up.

Is it your first time clipless Jake ?
I found i tended to bunch my toes (unknowingly) at first, a bit tensed up. I had to conciously relax my feet..Perhaps you're doing the same ?
Perhaps you've got slightly wider feet ? Shimano shoes are snug, i always look to get a size above my normal.

Probably just too small for your feet, I am size 44 but my size 45 Shimano R087s fit fine.

i have some shimano shoes that hurt my little toe after a while, they do come up small, like most cycling shoe you should go up a size, compared to normal shoes i have some spec comp shoes that are great. As for your sore toe , stick a plaster on it before you go out , works for me

The thing is I use them for commuting. I did go a size up to 45 normally a UK9. I'm going to Evans in the morning to try some other makes.

Why should you go up a size with any type of shoes? The idea is that you try a couple of sizes around your usual shoe size and buy the pair that fits best. That way you eliminate any size discrepancy without resorting to unreliable guesswork.

Having cycling shoes that are slightly too big is almost as bad as slightly too small.

One problem is buying online. I didnt know (and i guess many people at first dont know) that many cycling shoes are a 'tight' fit. I wear size 9, its reasonable to expect i'd buy size 9. Experience soon kicks in...buy a size above. But try your LBS first of course, One mans snug fit with a size above is another mans loose fit. Try them on first is the answer.

I do think that Shimano shoes seem to be narrower than others...

Are you advocating trying them on in your LBS and then buying online? Sure way for your LBS to go out of business...

:D No...(sorry if it gave that impression)i'm a great supporter of my LBS (in my own small way). Personally i havnt brought shoes online, but the temptations there. My commuting shoes cost virtually full whack in my LBS...it kinda hurts knowing i could have saved a wad buying online. The mistake was made with my first pair, just assuming the sizing would be the same.
A message to everyone, support your LBS, its not always as expensive as you think. My (at the time) newly released Bianchi was the same price in a small independant LBS as it was in Evans.
There's also the benefit of building a relationship with your LBS when you actually spend money there. Expertise, advice, friendly help, you cant get it for nothing.
