Swapping Knobbly Tyres for Road Tyres

Please can anyone tell me what size tyres I can use for the following.
I have a ten year old mountain bike, it is a cheap TOWNSEND (embarrassingly down market I know but it works), and I now want to drag it from the depths of my garage and ride it to commute 8.5 miles to work and 8.5 miles back home by road.
The tyres fitted at the moment are knobbly tyres measuring 26" x 1.75 at the front and 26" x 1.95 at the rear. I want to fit just a standard road tyre to front and rear but can I fit any 26" road tyre because there are a confusingly different number of widths and treads? Am I right in thinking that any 26" tyre will fit as the wheels are standard size at the point where the beading sits?
Thanks

Yes
Schwalbe 26x1.95 City Jets would be good tyres to get. The second number is the width and wider tyres tend to hold more air so give a slightly more comfortable ride. (I guess - I can't tell the difference myself).Steve C0 -
I did the same with an old Raleigh Cyclone fitting Schwalbe Landcruisers which have a smooth centre and tread to the sides for off road bits. I couldn't believe the difference it made. The City Jets should be good. I think the ones I had were the 1.75s.0

Off topic a little BUT I put on Specialized Nimbus Armadillo tyres on the weekend, pounded it this morning took just over 5 mins off my commute - think I can do better! Little on the expensive side but worth it so far.0

We recently got some City Jets through Halfords in 26x1.75 for just £11.99 each as they were on a special (order online, collect in store), they are on the elder daughters commuter and she's very happy with them.

Thank you for the responses. I now have two Continental City Tyres and self sealing inner tubes and ready to go.
I have another question but presume I must start a new thread.
Thanks again for the advice/responses.0
