Play in rear hub

Just giving my commuter a much needed service, when i removed the rear wheel i noticed play in the quick release, felt kind of like stirring something thick. then noticed i could lift to the cone bit and see all the bearings. Ive never actually looked closely at the hub before so not sure if its normal (doesn't seem normal), does it all tighten itself back up when the skewer is tightend?. If there is a problem is it an easy fix?

What is the hub? They do not self tighten.

Just need adjustment or maybe a service. Easy job, look at Parkools link in Nicklouse's sig.
