Which Shoes

I am looking at getting cycling shoes but wonder what you lot suggested. I don't want to spend silly money as this will be my first pair.
I had a look around and spotted some Shimano M077 for £60.
I read you have to get a size / half size bigger when buying cycling shoe so is this right?
Any links or suggestions welcome
Thanks

I would make sure you try them on. Shimano sizing is weird and doesn't seem to relate to my regular shoe sizing in any consistent way. I actually have two pairs of Shimano shoes (including a pair of M087s) that both fit but are different sizes.
The M087s are nice shoes, I assume that the M077s are similar bar the lack of a ratchet strap. I just wish they'd kept the colour scheme of the M086s
They are not in the least bit waterproof in the upper, though, and bizarrely the sole and lower part of the shoe is. They come with a couple of bits of sticky plastic that you stick over the plate the cleat screws into to waterproof the sole. I ended up taking it out because at least that way when they fill with spray the water has somewhere to drain.0 -
When do you intend to use your cycling shoes?0
-
Def try them on
just got mine for 20mile commute each way ( first attempt on Tuesday weather permitting first time near any exercise for a couple of years !!!!!!!!!)
Brought a pair a specialized size 12 normally a squeeze fitted lovely last years shoes
tried this years but other styles felt tighter at a 13 and 13 1/2 the BG COMPNot that bad but bad enough for me0 -
As a general rule, yes, you need a size up. Road shoes really aren't ideal for the commute, however. I have an almost new pair of size 44 (I am a 42 in ordinary shoes) Specialized BG Expert Road Shoes up for grabs if that suits? Fantastic shoe, but I'm simply not using them so time to sell them on.0

I am normally a size 9 so a 44 is a half bigger, PM me a figure and I will have to pop to a local cycle shop to test fit some on I think.Cube Reaction GTC Pro 27.5 2017 Grey / Yellow Flash

Went to a couple of local shops with no joy today, typical.
I did give a M077 a go as thats all they had (Halfords in the end) but it was a size 43 which is a 9 which is current tainer size.
as was inspected they were to tight but I couldnt tell if I need to go a half or full size bigger.

For commuting, it's worth looking at mtb shoes. Since the spd cleats are recessed they're much easier to walk in. The cleats are also more protected when you have to unclip at junctions so can last longer than the more exposed road cleats.
Something like the shimano mt42 (or it might be mt43 now) can be picked up for under £50. I've also heard good things about the specialised Tahoe shoe, which I think is around the £60 mark.0 -
Yes unless you like the penguin look I'd avoid road/racing shoes if you want to be able to walk any distance (i.e. from bike shed to desk).
I use Specialized BG Sport MTB shoes and couldn't be happier with them.

I'm usually a size 10 (44.5) and these are 45. So yeah half a size to a size up is probably a good idea if you can't try before you buy.0 -
For a second then I thought there was a bargain with that link and then reslised there was only one size leftCube Reaction GTC Pro 27.5 2017 Grey / Yellow Flash

The advice above is very good.
I have cheapy Specialized recessed SPD cleat shoes for the commute, which are fab for their job.
The Specialized road shoes I will sell are fantastic and super comfy, but I'm just not using them. I'll be sticking them on Ebay this week and I'll be happy if I can get £100 for them (thus suffering a £60 loss after just a handful of rides use).
I'm told that Specialized shoes are good for those of us with wider feet and that yes, you should definitely go a size up.0 -
I dont really want to spend that much on a first pair, I think I will try the Specialized Sport MTB as the local shop does list them on there site so should be able to get them to order both a 44 and 44.5 in to try on.
I also got my bike there so might be able to push for some discountCube Reaction GTC Pro 27.5 2017 Grey / Yellow Flash

Ok, I realise that I am a bit late on this one, but just wanted to add my 2p...
Specialized BG Sport Touring - the road, MTB and Touring shoes all have the same stiffness of sole. For my commute, I went with the Touring which has the recessed SPD cleat and looks like a regular shoe. Very easy to walk in.
I was set to get the road version, but it was pointed out here that for a commute with regular clip in/out at traffic lights etc, the SPD version was better. And this was good advice.Quite addicted to cycling now....0 -

I did my first SPD commute last week, I had to keep telling myself "my feet are attached to the peddle, my feet are attached to peddle" thankfully didn't fall off :-)

Glad the OP is sorted, but for anyone else I would strongly recommend hanging on until Lidl's next bike stuff sale, their MTB style SPD shoes are superb for commuting, good for walking in and a bargain for <£20. I also have a pair of Aldi's SPD road shoes and they are very good as well for £19, just not very good for walking.0
