i have an old wheel that i am going to give to my mate for his bike but the wheel is currently on a bike used for discs however the rim looks like it could be designed for rim brakes.

it has what looks like a wear line indicator and parallel surfaces but the rim is painted black, will the fact it is painted mean it is of no use?

i thk ive seen wheels with anodized braking surfaces sold with the caveat that the surface colour will wear off so im sure there is such a thing as a rim brake rim which is coloured but is there any way to tell if thats hat i have?

DMR's DV (disc and V-brake) rims are painted black. Someone asked CRC if V-brakes would work on them and they replied that they would. The paint will just wear off.

Let him use it - if the brakes don't work he may die, so make sure he's willed all his bike bits to you.
You could also console the grieving widow. Sure Mrs Teeth won't mind.

The rim on my bike's rear wheel is also painted black, but can accept rim brakes. It's a Mavic EX 721.
