Students, insurance?

I'm back to the joys of full time education this August, and although I will not be staying in halls, or typical "student accommodation" I still will be classified as a student living in a house. I'm not happy or comfortable to leave my 3 bikes in my room without some sort of protection, prime for being stolen.

What do people use to insure their bikes? In total my 3 bikes are worth just shy of 3k with their upgraded parts, and to replace them for 2011 bikes it would cost even more.

The house I will stay in is no doubt already insured but certainly not for this value. So i need separate insurance, but some of the quote seem seriously high (£300 or so), and on top I'd need them locked with a gold standard lock (3 Kryptonites at £80 a pop). Even then, what do I lock it to in a room where you cant really start drilling holes in to?

Anyone else solved this tricky situation?

Do you need to lock them individually if they're inside the address you insure them at? I'm fairly sure my policy says I only need to secure them when I'm out and about as it were.

Personally I only have 1 bike with me at any time at uni (if I even have one here at all), just change the details of the policy each time I want to swap them. Most I pay is £135 I think for the year which covers the bike and replacement values of the upgraded parts and "fixed accessories".

Kryptonite Evo series 4 is sold secure gold and about £30 off Amazon.

Sometimes you can use your parents policy, but the restriction is usually that the bikes have to be away from home for no more than 90 days and in a secure location (i.e. bike shed).

    a bit more detail.

Basically I have my XC bike, my road bike, and my jump bike im building, I love riding them all equally (well i assume I'll enjoy the jump bike!) so would struggle to pick one to take with me and leave the rest behind.

I do not ride my bike somewhere, leave it for a few hours and ride back, if its not at home, its got me sitting on it. its purely for leisure not for commuting

I was looking into a New York chain with lock, like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kryptonite-York ... 234&sr=8-7 just to keep them locked in the house, but still what do you lock them to?

    Any recommended insurance companies?

Take a look at pragmasis chains/locks. They are stronger than the kryptonite, sold secure gold rated for the insurance and cheaper too. Depending on the chain length and your choice of padlock, you can get one for £70 ish

Check Endsleigh for student insurance - may cover the bikes in the house, if you explain you don't want cover anywhere else.

Adding bikes is often so expensive because they include cover away from the home, if all you want is cover for when someone breaks in and walks off with your bike it's often significantly cheaper.
