My first decent ride.

Sooooo......i managed my first decent ride (that wasnt round the block) fully kitted out today. My bib shorts and jersey came the other morning so i was itching to get out. What a difference the right gear makes!!
The biggest thing ive noticed is, my ass isnt sore! Thank goodness for padded shorts. Other things i found out are, my gut looks huge in a tight top when im on the bike (more reason to keep up the training), the soles of my feet and my shoulders are a little sore and i really need to buy a bottle and cage.
Oh, and i had my first 'almost-falling-over-because-i-couldnt-get-my-feet-out-of-the-pedals' moment. Which was nice.
Happy riding folks

Welcome to your new world. You will soon own umpteen shorts and jerseys, not to mention jackets, shoes, etc. It is very addictive.
Get two cages and bottles, when you go for longer rides you may well need more fluid.
Great feeling isn't it?0 -

I had the same experience. I started riding in march and was using gym clothes. When I finally got the gear and the courage required I made my way out in cycling clothes and was amazed. There is no chance of me ever going back.
My first jersey was given to me and was a SPAM jersey (potted meat). I was embarassed of it but loved wearing the cycling clothes. I have since bought one that brings me less shame.

In the same boat. I am working to shed another 60 or 70 pounds. I have a long way to go but have lost 40 since January so on a good start. Keep working on it!! It will be gone before you know it.

+1 on two cages - I still only have one but need to get a second.

I am getting shoes and pedals tomorrow. I am sure I will have my own experience very soon.
Do you track your miles and experiences anywhere? I started a blog (see link below if you'd like) to track mine and it has really helped to keep me motivated.
Happy riding folks
Thanks and to you too0 -
Well done
I had my first decent ride out through Epworth / Haxey, and now try to get 35 to 40 miles in each saturday morning out through Wroot, Epworth, Owsten Ferry etc and longer rides when I get the time available, though this is an issue at the moment
Its a great area to ride around, although it can get very breeze, the one let down is the lack of hills0 -

Thanks for the replys folks. It really is a nice feeling when you finish your first decent ride. Ok, it was only about 25 miles, but that literally was my first ride further than the 3 mile trip between villages, i didnt feel too tired considering i hadnt eaten since lunch time and had been doing physical work all day. Looking forward to getting out again with some bottles and decent food in me!
Ive just downloaded and installed the runkeeper app for iphone and am going to give it a try, i like the way it tracks you and you can view it back (a friend uses it).
Gozo - while im a complete novice, the only tip i can give you about pedals is make sure you unclip 1 foot at any junction you think you might have to stop at. Its easier to clip back in than to fall off and look like a fool at a busy junction.
GA1 - If you ever fancy a ride out, gimme a shout. Are there any casual clubs around here?
Thanks again0 -
Where do you head from Haxey? I live in Pontefract and often find myself over towards East Cowick and Sykehouse (just to the northeast of you). It's a bit (very!) flat, but it's okay for a spin out.Ben
