rear derailler indexing
folks
im having a wee problem getting the indexing on my rear derailler correct. i dont want to put it into the shop as i want to
learnhow to do this myself.
heres what im doing
chain is on the middle front ring ( its a triple), back small ring
ive undone the pinch bolt and turned the barrel adjusters clockwise on both the derailler and the shifter so the cable has the most amount of slack.
ive pulled the cable at the derailler reconnected the pinch bolt. ive then clicked the shifter to take the chain onto
the seconed sprocket at the rear and slowly turned the barrell adjuster anti clockwise untilthe chain jumps onto the second sprocket
fine!!!.. the chain moves up the gears fine, but coming back down the changes are very sluggish and at the last click it wont drop onto the smallest ring!!!!!
any idea what im doing wrong!!!!
cheers

mucky cable. damage to the outer. or too much cable tension.
read the how too on park tools.
but using the barrel adjuster to set the tension as you are is wrong."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

thanks for the reply nick

Only continue turning the adjuster until the chattering noise disappears. Dont go too far past this point or you will over tension so restricting the chains ability to drop back.
Also check out shimano tech docs for indexing. It may be a little out. Also check b tension and adjust screw as required. The jockey wheel teeth should be around 7mm clear (I think, but check optimum distance) from the cassette teeth.
Also definitely clean the cables and lube with rock n roll magic cable lube or similar.0 -

Yes but is the cable outer new also?
9/10 this is caused by a sticky cable and if the outer is old and corroded/worn it'll not go away.0 -
