If i am using a XT low mount front mech with a double chainset should i set the distance from the large sprocket to the mech as i would on a triple chainset?

    it depends.

what type of double? got a bash? what ring sizes?

if the original granny and middle of a 3 ring set up you dont change a thing other than screw in the stop.

40-26 nick with no bash guard. Converted from a XT m770-10 chainset.

    Mmmm

a bit of both. I think you are pushing it on a 14 change.

it depends on which stop you are screwing in.

I would use 1 and 2 on the shifter and screw in the top stop screw and have a play. usual things like the cage catching on the chain when in the small rear .

Cheers Nick, my shifters are the new XTR so i can change that between 2 and 3 speed upfront. Dont think that makes any difference though other than just limiting the amount of clicks and throw that the lever itself has.
