Tora 302 Solo Air clicking noise

Hello,
I have the above forks which came with my bike when I bought it in 2009. They have been really good, but have started making a kind of clicking noise under compression. After googling around, some people seem to think this is unremarkable and just part of the forks action. Is this true? They only make the noise under compression, at the beginning of the stroke, and there is no noise when the forks are locked out.
I'm trying to work out whether to just leave them as is for now and keep riding (as they still seem to compress and rebound reasonably well). If they are knackered and need servicing I've half a mind to buy some rigid carbon forks, as these would probably be cheaper than a service and would likely be fine for a lot of my rides.
I should probably open the forks up and have a look myself. Do I need any special tools/materials? Don't want to take them apart and realise I can't put them together again.
Any advice would be much appreciated, cheers.

The equalizer valve can make clicking noises and be felt as a faint clunk. Also if the O rings start to wear the air tube inside can become a bit loose in where the top cap fits.
Sounds like they need a service, and O rings replacing.0 -
