I wanted something that I could take offroad but would not be a pain for commuting when conditions don't suit the road bike.
I have been looking at mountain bikes but I hate the feel of front suspension on tarmac and I didn't want to spend the money needed for a bike with decent lockable forks. The LBS suggested a Giant Escape M1 that was reduced to £300 and it looked like just what I was after. Decent disc brakes, MTB frame but no suspension. The LBS even said he will put knobbly tyres on it so I don't go tits up on mud or wet grass.
I pick it up tomorrow and my bike carrier is in the boot already.
