Hi all,
I thought I would ask if anybody else has had issues here. I've an 2008 Fox Float RL 130mm fox and the fork crown race doesn't sit on the steerer tube as it should. I mean it can be pushed on by hand, and it can also be removed by hand, i;e with your fingers. Iv'e even just tried a new crown race and thats the same. Its looking like that the steerer has worn slighty????
The issue I'm having here is that the fork is knocking with the play from the crown race..
Any Ideas?
Paul.

Hi,
Yeah I've been thinking this, what if its the wrong size......What is the other size.
This fork I believe was from a trek EX8 2008, are they a differant size???

The only other sizes I can think of would be very loose (like not fit at all)!
The crown race on my Smart Guys is looser than normal (alloy steerer) though not as loose as you describe so I use some loctite bearing lock on it to stop it moving.

Don't know, what is the headset? Crown race is headset specific.
Just can't see a steerer tube wearing, especially in a few years.I don't do smileys.

what headset is it? many can be removed by hand.
How did it come off your old fork?
pics?
it can be that the two crown races have been at the extremes of tolerance.
but more info needed."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks guys to all that posted here.
I've now just got it sorted.......Turns out the crown race is slightly out of spec..
Went down the LBS, with my fork and crown race, steerer on the fork is ok, (thank god), the crownrace however is'nt. It sides on and off every fork we tried, all other crownraces of several types fitted ok.
Now then, this crownrace is a raceface dues brought on ebay last year with the headset as my other raceface had worn the bottom bearing. Seems kinda odd that both crownraces were both loose on the steerer. To be honest I didn't think anything of it as the first one was loose so was the second. Running a steel frame (cove) the twanging got worse.
Anyway what Iv'e learn't here is that yes all crown races should fit nice and snug and second BUY a good headset from a goodshop....
The hope headset is real smooth......And no more twanging....0 -
What sort of "twanging" were you getting, was it more of a click on the back and forth motions? only reason i ask is ive got a similar issue im still trying to figure out and ive already replaced my headset with a new one, so was wondering what the "twanging" really was.0
