TdF - Rough Camping Or Campsite ?

I am planning to take 3 Alpine Stages, but wanted to check if it is ok to rough camp by the side of the road, or will I have to check into camp sites ? I have a small 1 person tent.

I may just sleep in the damned car.

    Generally OK to camp by the sides of the road on the big climbs....quite a few thousand do on the final climb of each day. Take some booze and be prepared to share it out!!!
