Recommendations for suppliers of handbuilt wheels

Hi

I'm looking for advice/recommendations on who to choose to build some road wheels for me? This is my first venture in this area and I know that there have been previous posts on this topic but wondered what the current state of play is.

Other forum posts have suggested that while a lot claim to be able to wheel build it still has a lot of zen alchamy attcahed to the process and so its best to go to someone recommended with a good track record. How do you spot a good wheel builder Vs someone who just dabbles in the back of the workshop? Someone said that good wheel builders always have seven fingers on each hand and live in caves but that can't be right, can it?

Is it better to stay local or does anyone have any views/recommendations on builders from across the UK who operate mail order?

I'm Leicester (East Mids) based.
