Hi

I am new to the forum, so hello.

I am in the process of looking for a new bike and have 2 in mind, the Rcokhopper sl comp (899) and the Trek 6300 (849).

I would like any feedback advice on which one to get as I am in 2 minds about either.

I know the Trek has slightly better components and is cheaper, but the specialised has been around for ages.

I also prefer the look of the Trek

Many thanks

Try them both & get the one that feels/looks better.

You could also look at other brands which may provide better value for money and give more bang for your buck. Canyon and cube spring to mind. Or maybe even consider a used bike.

at 999 euros the canyon takes some beating

I brought a Canyon, it broke after three weeks (the Pivot Bolt & Bearing came out behind the Chainset). It then took nearly five weeks to sort it out and get a full refund.

I now own a Trek, sorted.
  • Thanks for the info all, I will try and get out to a shop and test ride each.

I do like the Trek though

Best try them both out. I have a 2010 Trek 6300 and have been delighted with it; no complaints. Something else to consider is any guarantee that might come with the bike (lifetime on the frame for Trek) and how they are with customer service (top marks for Trek). They're both big brands which means they'll both have a sizeable following; very useful when it comes to asking about them on forums.

  • Cheers again all

Good to know about the benefits of getting a Trek re the warranties, I suppose the same is for the specialised as well

I have a trek 6500 2011, my wife has a 2011 mans Rockhopper Pro. I love them both. I bought the trek in the end due to the colour and the warranty. Prices are simalar and the specs both have pro and cons. The Trek has elixir brakes as the Spesh has Juicys as an example.
I don't mind what they say... as long as they say its enormous

I didn't ride Trek in question, but would highly recommend Rockhopper due to it's sweet frame. That frame for XC is some proper beast, no wonder many beginner-junior racers opt for Rockhopper to start racing with. I am biased obviously.

Google some reviews on Rockhoppers and see what I meant, still miss that bike.

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
  • I think the Trek has the same brakes as the Rockhopper as well

Try them both out and see which you prefer. Personally I'd say the rockhopper.
  • I went and had a test ride, must say they both feel good.

They didnt have the Trek 6300, but I tried the 6000 and 6500 as well as the rockhopper. All bikes felt good.

I think I prefer the Trek, could not really tell the difference between the 6000 and the 6500, so may just end up with the 6000, rather than the 6300, decisions decisions!

tbh that is the only negative review of canyon i have heard of so its a shame it happened to you but these things bound to happen.

doesnt mean you should right them off, i suprised you didnt just sit tight and let them fix it for you seems a waste of time and money buying one bike then as soon as it brakes you give up and buy another one tbh.

But on topic i have rockhopper and its a good bike it gives you confidence to do things you really shouldnt be doing on a hardtail

Problem is currently the rockhopper isnt worth the money shops are trying to sell them for as their spec just isnt worth the bank for buck.

Id consider buying another bike with better value ie boardman bikes or buying direct sales from ie canyon, as this give you far better value for money..

I did give them every chance to sort this out tbh, they failed on every level. They failed to resolve the situation, they failed to collect the bike, they failed to contact me, they failed to offer any level of customer service.

I have no quibble with the fact that the bike broke due to a manufacturing fault (no loctite on the bearing), but what I do have an issue with is the fact they could not sort it out in any timely manner. In fact nearly five weeks TBH. if they had fixed the bike within 1 -2 weeks I would still be riding it today.

I understand that the world is an imperfect place and nuts & bolts will fall out all the time, but if you had spent £1800+ for the bike to break after three weeks use and the company who you brought it from couldn't collect it when they said they would, send the right part to get it fixed nor fix it when it returned to Germany and then be told that I would have to wait another 6 - 7 weeks before I could get another bike.....wouldn't you be annoyed? Would you feel that you time & money has been well spent?

So in the end I got my full refund and enjoy the trails on a my new Trek.
