evening all.

I want to convert my 456 to a 2x9 speed setup. I've seen a 10 speed double chainset for at a good price but I'm not sure if it will work?

My proposed set up is 9 speed SRAM shifters, mechs and cassette with a SRAM 10 speed chainset.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

it is all covered in the FAQS.

Thanks for the quick response. I had a look in the FAQs and it covers most bits but not my particular query. Are the spacings between the rings the same on 9 and 10 speed chainsets as iIm looking to keep my 9 speed shifters?

  • 9sp shifters don't work with a 10sp rear mech I don't think.

Thanks. I'm looking to keep everything 9 speed apart from the new chainset so that shouldn't be an issue. It's ust the front chainset I'm worried about.

Indeed, but that isn't what he's asking, he's asking if he can use a 10 speed chainset on his 2x9 bike, in other words will a 9 speed front shifter and chain work with a 10 speed chainset.

  • so assuming you already have a 9sp chainset, why not just buy different sized rings in a 2x9 flava?

What chainset do you have now?

i'm looking to uprade the chainset at the same time. I've currently got a Truvativ Fire X and have seen a SRAM X9 at a good price.

  • Whats your budget and what price are you getting it at?

Unless the price is amazing or you're considering changing to 10sp completely, i'd possibly consider changing the chainset to another 9sp if it'll save some ££

    Depends what you want/need though!

SRAM X9 10 speed chainset for £130 inc. BB (28 / 42 gearing which will suit me down to the ground!) Nearest 9 speed I've found is a Raceface Evolve double and bash for £152 so bit of a no brainer if it turns out to be compatible.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

I ended up going for this:

No thrills but not likely to cause any problems!
