Creaking From ?headtube When Steering
Secteur

I hear this especially at low speeds (i.e. when walking the bike).
Seems to be coming from where headtube meets the forks but very hard to pin down.
I have stripped, cleaned & lubricated it to no effect.
Driving me mad! Any suggestions?

gaddster,
I agree with you. Secteur, If you can't pin the noise on the headset, then perhaps the cable outer sheath has broken down. This happened to my gore sealed cables within a few months and they're now as nosy as hell. No such trouble with Dura Ace outers though!Simon G0 -
I had this on my allez, like you I adjusted the headstock to no avail, eventually pinned it down to the gearcables where they entered the plastic bit on the downtube, a drop of lube and it cured it.0

You can get a lot of creaking from carbon/aluminium mix forks.0

When ever I have had it I have re-greased the headset bearings and tightend up again. No problems after, and no creaks.0

Will have another good look tomorrow - the cables could well be the problem - sometimes it's surprisingly hard to pin-point these noises!
It's a definite "creak" rather than a squeak or rub.0 -

That's spooky, my boardman comp has just started doing this but is only noticable when cleaning it or wheeling it around.0

that's the only time I hear it on mine - when pootling it about in the garage - never when riding.
Will be cleaning & inspecting it tonight.
Mine has done roughly 800m, I think.0 -
Probably cables, as the fork shouldn't have enough movement in it to creak. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle
