Just a friendly reminder that if you are riding up on the hills where sheep and animals graze, you stand a fair chance of picking up ticks if you stop to open gates etc. A program on the telly reminded me of the risk of Lyme disease. Basically if you get an itch check it out and remove the tick as quickly as possible and check for the bulls eye mark later. If you get flu like symptoms go to the docs ASAP.

The quicker you get it out the less chance of catching it.

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago which has made me a tad paranoid about riding through the forest...... If I ever DO find a tick on me I think I'd be so shocked I woudl probably pass out

Next time you go past a Vets pop in and buy a tick remover just in case. Only a couple of quid. And should aid in removal. Leaving a tics mouth in your skin is NOT advisable
  • Went on a ride last week and my mate came back with about 10 tics, For some reason I had none. Some of the ticks he had were too small for the tic hooks from the vet. He then found a shop selling a Tic card and it easily removed the tiny little tics http://www.tickremoval.co.uk/tick_card.html ideal as it will fit in your wallet

Tics are like many insects, they seem to prefer some people!

I tend to spray a bit of insect repellent (God bless DEET) on over the summer as riding on Dartmoor can turn you into a mobile meal for the flying/creeping locals!

I'm staying at home from now on :!:
  • Tick card looks good but could be awkward in confined spaces!. Magnifier is a good idea, the two I've taken off myself were so small and in awkward places the OH had to verify they were ticks. So on a sunny day you can torture them by slowly cooking them too! Bonus!

Is there anything special about those tick cards or could you use any bit of card with a slot cut in it? As I understand it you don't want to burn them off as they will then vomit in your wound, which increases the chances of infection.
