Summary: £500 hardtail required for a few months, big chap, 6ft 2 ect. :D

RIght folks, basically I am waiting to start a new job in September, I have just come back from travelling and have no bike at the moment having sold most of my stuff before I went away….. I am going to splash on a FS around £1500-2000 when I start my new job, but want a cheap hardtail to tide me over for the summer months…. I am probably looking to spend up to £500 ish…..

Obviously there are the Carrera range from Halfords but I am not keen on those too much, I am considering the Cube Aim for Around £380 ish…..

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would be using the bike offroad on light trails and some on road to and from the trails I expect.

Sorry for asking but I have trawled through so many threads on here and I am none the wiser!

For your budget you could get a rockrider 8.0 & have £100 left over for a decent saddle & pedals.

  • Get a full sus on finance? Put down a £500 deposit? I'm sure you could get interest free...

Thanks for the rockrider comment, will take a look when I am next near the Decathlon store. I thought about doing finance, but I would rather wait and pay outright, I don't have any finance ect so no need to start for a bike really.

just a option here but maybe consider a rigid bike for the moment or a road bike?

I mainly say this as getting a rigid bike may be a bit cheaper than hardtail while having quality frame +rigid fork can do many things a hardtail can do.

Also spending £500 for something you only going to use a few months seems a waste of cash maybe just do some demo days which will help you pick a bike and keep you happy?

have you considered buying second hand? I recently built up a lovely single speed for sub £500 budget. Not saying you'll want an ss but what im saying is it can be done on the cheap.

I know it's still halfords, but what about the Voodoo range?

Voodoo have been going long before any association with halfords so to discriminate against them because of it would be very silly, do you see anybody bemoaning GT or Kona's past involvement?

On the subject of the voodoo's having seen them I would happily put them on my shortlist to test as they look superb for the outlay, the decathlon range fair pretty well too the £500 hardtail (5.3?) looks great for the cash. Most £500 bikes now are below par so look for dual piston hydraulic disk brakes, a properly damped fork and a decent quality frame.
