Eggbeaters - to service kit or not?

Dumb question time...
I've got a pair of eggbeaters which have been used sparingly ( i couldn't get the hang of them - but I have now ) since 2004 and have only recently come out of the cupboard again. Today I noticed black grease on the spindles so my question is this - is this something which requires the Crank Bros servicing kit or is it a problem with the seals which can be easily adjusted without the kit?
