Im thinking of upgrading my wheels, I ride a hardtail Stumpjumper. I mainly ride xc events so weight is important but I do the odd bit of trail centre stuf so id like them to be quite strong also.

Iv got a maximum of £300 at the min im looking at hope pro 2 evo hubs on mavic xc717 rims from merlin.

I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

Id be greatful for any ideas

Cheers

Hope Hoops on Crest rims, lighter, tougher (IMO), better tubeless compatibilibty and better value.

Otherwise look at ActionSports.de, they often have light builds going cheap on their own Fun Works hubs.

I have Pro 2's with Mavic 719's from Merlin and can't recomend them enough. The 717's are lighter but the Stans rims would be best for light wieght. Superstar wheels also get good reviews but not sure of weight.

I picked up some of these last night, have always had Mavic rims previously but these do seem good. Certainly very light, will be interested in seeing how they handle my not insignificant bulk.

I haven't gone tubeless yet, but it certainly opens up that option.

Got mine from Pedalon, front about £107, rear £180'ish so easily within your budget.

+1 for crest/pro2 combo, light, strong and very adaptable, rims are alot better than 717's IMO, as njee said, lighter and better tubeless compatibility and I actually reckon they're stronger too
  • thanks very much for all your replies! Im now swaying towards the crest rims, Pedalon seem to be out of stock now! But im fancying abit of red hub bling action so guna see what merlin can do.

    thanks again

Any Hope Pro Shop (or whatever they call their premium dealers) can do Hoops with coloured hubs IIRC.

Think Swinnerton's tend to be good value.

I have just bought some Blue pro 2 evo hoops on crest rims. Bought them from 18Bikes in Hope, £330 including yellow rim tape, stans tubeless valves and 2 tubs of sealant. Good deal and very fast turn around. Ordered on the Sunday and were in the shop on the Tuesday.

Mavic Crossmax XL arent the lightest of wheel, over 1800grams iirc.

surely the hope pro2/cresta's are a better option?

  • the merlin deal is tempting, are the crests worth 80 quid more? It would be nice to have the option to go tubeless. I dont no what to do!
  • Rick thanks very much think you might of made my mind up there!

I just bought a pair of Hope Hoops running Evo 2 / Crest combo, they look very nice but have not used them yet.

Also just ordered a pair of Pro-Lite Allien wheels for £154.50 posted for a 1600 gram wheelset on offer from ribble cycles, look like these could be worth a try for the money too!
