I'm currently in the process of putting a road bike together with various bits so there might be a few posts like this I'm afraid!
I've just bought a 105 53-39 double crankset (5500 series). I've looked at two different shimano compatibility charts each with conflicting advice on.
Would this chainset work with a Tiagra 9sp 4500 double front derailleur?
If so, which Shimano STIs would it work with?
Thanks!

yip it will work with the tiagra front mech as for shifters you can use any 9 speed tiagra/105/ultegra or dura ace ones

Would it possible to use 10speed if I got a 10speed rear derailleur? It seems odd that the front derailleur is 9speed. Thanks a lot for your help!

you can theoretically get away with a 9 speed rear mech. The mechs are brute force components they don't care whether you run 8 9 or ten speed. The only difference is that 8 speed are wide enough for 8 speed chains, 9 speed mechs are narrower for 9 speed chains and 10 speed are a teensy bit narrower still for the 10 speed chains. But you can run a 10 speed chain through 9 speed mechs with a teensy bit of adjustment in the front mech to avoid chain rub.

To go ten speed though the major components you'd need would be 10 speed shifters and obviously a 10 speed cassette and chain.

you cant run a 10 speed system using 9 speed shifters.

So with what you've said you have this would work as a ten speed

    1. 10 speed shifters
    2. your 9 speed mech with a bit of tweaking
    3. 10 speed rear mech
    4 10 speed cssette
    5. 10 speed chain.

Awesome, thanks a lot for your help! I'm trying to make up a groupset on the cheap and I'm beginning to think it may be less hassle just to buy new!
  • Hopefully you are aware that 5500 cranks are of the Octalink (road) standard, with fairly dear bottom brackets compared with modern outboard bearings.

Awesome! You running 10speed rear? I presume most STI shifters will work as long as they're the correct gear number?

These seem rather cheap to me:

Aslong as they work with that I've got I'm assuming they should it's worth buying right?

This is listed under Dura-Ace 7700. If true that is a proper bargain.

Well done. I decided to give up on Octalink and bought new 6600 cranks and rings for 60 quid off Blighty Ebay.

Salden have a chat facility and I'm sure they, being Dutch, speak English should you wish to check if they really are D-A 7700. Let us know too please.
