Signed up for the 5 Dale though may well end up on the 4 Dale depending how bad/good I feel at Hawes. I'm finding the thought of Fleet Moss and Park Rash kinda intimidating TBH

Right now I'm off to pretend to get some training in up and down some lesser Wharfedale hills.

I registered for the 5 Dales, but I might change to the 4 Dales, but i'll see how I feel. Park Rash is bad bad bad! It's actually short but very steep. Some of the descents are fast and you'll need to be careful.

Actually the hardest part is right at the beginning. When you leave the start you ride for half a mile and turn right at some lights and there's a steep bank to climb. Don't know why but I always struggle up that climb, at least when you get to Park rash you'll be in cycling mood.

Weather forecast looks OK, but a bit breezy.

I am looking foward to it. I agree that the first section of park rash is mega steep but its worth the effort.

Looking forward to this, not being able to do it for the last 2 years due to personal commitments,
as mentioned before hoping to finally lay the ghost that is PARK RASH! just hope the weather improves a bit.

Hmmmmm, you might not want to hang around Park Rash in a 'Buckled Rims' T-shirt after making that remark! There'll be a lot of people queuing up to forceably disagree with you!

The hardest part for me last year was fleet moss and park rash. I didn't eat enough and bonked on that bloody drag to leyburn. Hell of a route with some fast rolling roads and 50mph descents.

Just eat every 40mins and you'll be fine.

Take a look around and you'll be blown away with the scenery.

    Enjoy

I did the 5 dale 100 today. The first 3 climbs were actually quite brutal with the westerly wind, and the crosswinds on the descents were hairy at times. The best descent was from Park Rash with a tailwind, but I found the last effort up to Leyburn a bit soul destroying after the previous efforts. Top marks to the organisers - clear road signs, plenty of grub and a hot meal and hot showers at the end.

i did the 3 dale 50 today, it was brilliant!, apart from the horrible headwind up the stang and Tan hill, i managed to finish 67th out of 220 on the 3 dale, and it was my first ever sportive!
It was a great day and would like to thank the whole team of organizers, especially Sven!
im only 16 so i only had to pay £5! absolute bargain for the quality of the ride and feed stops!

i did the 100m route today, or should i say i did about 25m of the 100m route before my rear derailleur snapped 100 yards from the top on tan hill (which wasn't even a hill at all really, just a series or shallow inclines joind by flat or declines and even with the wind i was suprised how difficult some people were making it)?

one of the organisers picked me up from the pub and got me back to the hq pretty quickly which was appreciated. i hope to head up there at some point in summer to ride the route

I did the 5 dales today. Not the smartest move considering I have only clocked 1.5hrs ride time since the fred whitton challenge due to a 10 day spell bed bound due to severe food poisoning and only got out my bed 5 days ago against the docs orders.

I knew I had not fully recocvered as after an hour riding I felt really unwell and started to suffer stomach cramps and just bascially did not have the legs for climbing. Unlike GSK82 I found the road to Tan Hill really bad and was running out of gears due to the wind( which was really bad and could not even hear myself think) and how bad I was feeling. Normally I can blast up that section and dont find it a problem at all even in big gears but today I was going backwards and also on the section to Nateby. I was getting passed by loads of people and felt really bad.

Could not stomach any real food and had to rely on gels and gave myself a shake at Hawes and knuckled down to business of riding fleet moss and park rash.

Started to feel better towards the end and clocked in a time of 6:50 which I am proud off considering the conditions today and my upset tum.

Great day out though and fantastically organised and probably the best value event for money apart from the ken laidlaw sportive that I know of. I totally enjoyed my run today and its a perfect way to spend the day before your 40th birthday

As for the weather apart from the head wind I only got 10mins of hail coming of the stang and got round the rest of the course with fairly good weather especially towards the end.

Meant to add that on the descent from fleet moss I found somebodys cycle bag that clips onto the saddle. It was red & black and medium sized. I handed it in to the guys at the last feed station before park rash who were going to take it to the finish.

Quite a few of our Riders did this Event today, they have already posted up their ride reports here, a true grit sort of day, I'd say..............

After the strong headwind all the way to Nateby I quickly made up my mind that the 4 dales was for me and ditched the idea of the 100.

The day started badly (as usual for my sportives) when I took the car out of the garage and the engine management light stayed on. The code reader showed the problem was the same as has happened a few times, a false positive, so I just cleared it.

Although I felt strong for the full 100 mile, the fore mentioned headwind/crosswind absolutely sapped me. I can't think of a time in the past few years when I stayed in low gear (39-27) for so long even on some small descents! I still can't believe it took me 2hr 30mins to get to Keld - I could have ran it faster.

I felt good after a 5 minute break at Hawes, but looking at the time meant I would be way out of Silver and maybe even Bronze for the 100. At least I had a chance of a Bronze on the 80 mile route, which I did eventually get with ease.

Great organisation and a firm favourite sportive, many thanks to the Richmond club.

Doesn't look like a lot of Gold awards this year, which makes me feel a bit better

I'm really happy. I made it round the 100 this year for the first time after a couple of goes at the 80, including one which was a bail out from the 100. I was hoping to get round in less than 8 hrs so was well pleased with 7 hrs 34 mins, especially given the wind out there today. I was 19 minutes slower to Keld this year than last year  Great ride down Coverdale with the tail wind. Made it up Fleet Moss and Park Rash too, though walking might have been faster........

Brilliant organisation again by the guys at Richmond CC. Thanks guys!

Was meant to do the 100, but after being buffeted relentlessly by a head/side wind over Tan Hill, in fact most of the 1st 50 miles, i decided to bail out at Hawes and opt for the 80, heard lots of other riders talking about the same idea ( 255 entrants 117 finished) Never experienced winds like that before and for me, it spoilt an otherwise great event, tip my hat and a pat on the back for all those who completed the 100,and a huge well done to the organisers, best feed stops i have encountered. Gonna have to wait til next year to conquer Park Rash, mind you that climb at preston under scar was some sting in the tail

This was a hard 100 miles for me. Like Brain B i was bad after the FW.
Found out it was Campylobacter.one of the ways you can catch it is dirty water and there was plenty of that getting sprayed up off wheels!
So me too was having cramping pain in the stomach.
Had a puncture down coverdale as well!
So missed Gold by a few mins.
Thank for all good feed back, Make getting in and out the car on friday, putting 130 plus
sign out all worth it
Hope to see you all next year,

I've downloaded all the times, including the splits into a speadsheet. I've also ranked everyone over each of the legs so you can see how you performed on each leg of the ride compared to your overall position.

If anyone wants a copy PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it across to you. It's available in Excel and Open Office formats. Let me know which one you want.

I was tested and its was Campylobacter that I had as well and harboured suspicions that it might be from the FWC due to the weather. Chucked out my old worn water bottles and got some new ones.

Thanks for the great day on Saturday as despite my stomach the event was flawless and as I said before probably the best value for money that you can get.

Does anyone know who the photographer was for the event?

He might have some pics of me going sideways on the descent of Tan Hill, that was no fun at all.

I competed the 100 and echo the previous comments on the strength of the wind in the first 50 miles. I was tempted to do the shorter distances, but kept going knowing that eventually the wind would be behind us. Park Rash with a tail wind was a plus!!
The organisation of the event was first class and everyone was so friendly.
Despite the wind and a slower time I had a fantastic day and will be back for my third attempt next year.

    They are up on http://www.sleepmonsters.com/photoshop_i.php

If you stick the date in the search thing at the top then the Richmond event shows. Paul Almond was the photographer.

This condition is why my doc, who is also a keen cyclist, advised me a while back to try use water bottles that have an attached flip lid, similar to what mtbs use, as well as dirty water there is also debris deposited on roads by animals that don't agree with the digestive system.

Another well run event from the Richmond club. Hard work in to the wind as far as Nateby, but at least the wind seems to have kept many cars off the route.

Any idea when the school is going to get the building work finished? It's been going on at least 2 years.

Bailed at Hawes too. No way know I'd have made it up those really big hills on Saturday.
Very well run event, fantastic scenery, excellent feed stops and really friendly encouraging people. Now I've got a better idea of how much training I'll need to actually do it next year!

School should be done this year!
So next year we will be able to Park cars in front of the new Building, as all the old blocks are getting knocked down.
the HQ will be in the same place, But we will enter from the front. No long walk round!
We are very lucky that we can use the school as are HQ. So "thank you" to Ian the Head at the school.
