Time Trialling

When I started TTing, I used to get overtaken all the time, I usually got a friendly word of encouragement as the riders passed with the roar of their disc wheels.
Now I've got a lot better, I try and do the same when I overtake someone. Although sometimes, especially near the end, I'm too full of snot to speak...0 -
As mentioned above, you will not get laughed at, I have been doing TT's for 3 years and have come from being fairly slow to being fairly fast, and yet have always had encouragement from the first event. I similarly give lots of encouragement to other riders be they newbies or more experienced riders.
As for taking gels for a 10, forget it, it is pointless. If you have a gel just before the start you will almost be finished before you get the best response from it. If you eat and drink properly during the day, you will have more than enough stored glycogen to complete a 10 mile race no matter how fast/slow you are.
Gears needed are purely based on speed, wind and terrain, go with what is comfortable for yourself.0 -

All you need for a time trial is a roadworthy machine, honestly. A drop-barred racer is best but a chap did our club '10' on his hybrid/MTB with rack and semi-slicks the other week (I doubt many people even noticed). We all love ogling the expensive, sleek racing machines but it's all about the rider in the end.Aspire not to have more, but to be more.0 -
Well I did my first 10 mile TT tonight. My aim was for 30mins and I managed 28.19 on the official timing so I'm very happy
It was a little breezy but nothing compared to the what we've had recently, and the course, although very flat overall, but seems to average to be a little up-hill on the way out, which was combined with the into-wind section of the ride. The result was an average of between 18 and 20mph on the way out, but I turned it around once I had the wind on my back I managed a bit better, recording 27mph average for mile 8!
The gps trace is here http://j.mp/m1eFBu. Looks like I went a little fast on mile 1 too, but I didn't feel like I was really dogging out the last couple of miles, which was good.
So, things learned tonight:
Disc wheels make a very frightening noise when they come past you!
My 'comfortable' cheapo cycling jersey is too baggy for TT's.
My Spesh Allez triple is just fine for this kind of thing til I'm fitter (although if I'm going to do it properly I might invest in some clip on aero bars).0 -
Nice one!0
