Squeaking creaking - shock or linkage?

Noticed this last ride on a uplift day at Forest of Dean - also noticed it yesterday over Cannock Chase. The rear shock/suspension linkage makes a squeak/creak noise when taking a bigger hit. Kind of like the noise you'd expect from a comfy old armchair!
As I said, it only happens when going through the best part of it's travel - Is it the shock? The linkage? It is almost impossible to tell when riding - just comes from that area. Can't really recreate it when off the bike as I can't compress the shock that much.
Any ideas before I get the WD40 out

strip clean and lube pivots as needed. if that shuts it up it may be the shock."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
